What each part is, and the problem it solves

A TJ lives with its top off, its doors off, or both. The seats take rain, sun, mud and dogs. A fitted neoprene cover is the wetsuit answer: it sheds water, and the original upholstery underneath stays clean.

Rough Country 91001 is a black set for both front buckets and the rear seat. Its maker data describes a four-layer build with foam padding and a polyester shell. Smittybilt 471301 is also a front and rear set in one box, made from neoprene and Cordura, with a padded and pleated center section.

Fitment, side by side

The 2003 refresh gave the TJ a new front seat. The old one had a rounder back. The new one has a distinct separation between the back and the headrest area. A fitted cover is cut to that outline, so both makers split their TJ covers at 2003.

Same Jeep, two seat outlines, two different cover sets. A fitted cover is cut to the seat's outline, so the 2003 redesign split the part numbers. 1997-2002 TJ rounder seat-back outline Rough Country 91000 2003-2006 TJ and 2004-2006 LJ distinct separation between back and headrest (dashed) Rough Country 91001

LJ owners should buy the black Smittybilt. The 471301 page says TJ/LJ. The tan 471325 page says TJ only, and its SEMA data carries the same limit.

Rough Country's maker data lists eight trim rows rather than every trim and year. Its own title and its SEMA fitment string both cover every 2003-2006 Wrangler 4WD, and the Unlimited from 2004. We read the short list as incomplete data, not a fitment limit.

Neither maker says how its rear cover handles the SE's removable bench versus the fold-and-tumble rear seat. Rough Country's own photo shows the rear cover on a fold-and-tumble base.

Rough Country says more about what is inside its cover. It names four layers and foam padding. It also says the neoprene layer is breathable and water-resistant. Quadratec adds that the outer polyester shell resists water and mildew.

Smittybilt's visible page makes no water claim at all. Only hidden search text on the page calls the covers water-resistant. For a Jeep that gets rained on, that silence matters.

The weights are not a like-for-like comparison. Rough Country's 11 lb is a product weight. Smittybilt's 14 lb is a package weight.

What's in the box

Rough Country ships the set as one carton, 27.6 by 20.9 by 8.5 inches. Quadratec lists the contents as a front seat cover pair and a rear seat cover. The maker adds headrest covers "where applicable".

Smittybilt's maker data says "Complete Set - Includes front and rear covers". Quadratec itemizes 2 front seat covers and 1 rear seat cover. Smittybilt does not say whether TJ headrest covers are included.

Install compared

Both are slip-on covers and neither needs tools. Rough Country quotes 1-2 hours, and Quadratec rates it Beginner (Level 1). Smittybilt gives no time. Quadratec lists its set as "Less than an hour".

Smittybilt publishes instructions. Rough Country, as far as we can find, does not. No Rough Country PDF exists in the dealer data we checked. ExtremeTerrain says no guide is available.

Smittybilt's sheet is generic across its Jeep covers. You fit the back section, push the front flap through the gap between the seat back and cushion, and fasten the hook-and-loop. Then you run the straps under the seat to the buckles. The TJ cover has a slot for the seat pull strap and a hole for the seat tilt lever.

Watch the passenger seat. Owners report that the 2003-2006 TJ added an easy-entry lever on its side, so check that the cover leaves it free.

What it changes on the Jeep

Very little, which is the point. A cover adds no geometry and needs no supporting parts. What it can change is access: seat levers, the rear seat release and the seat belt buckles all have to stay reachable.

TJ seats carry no side airbag, based on everything we checked. So airbag cutouts are not a buying factor here. Seat-mounted side airbags were first listed on the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited, after the TJ ended.

Warranty and support

Rough Country's maker data states a 2 Year Limited Warranty. Quadratec, ExtremeTerrain and Suspension Superstore all list 1 year instead. We publish the maker figure, but confirm it with Rough Country at 1-800-222-7023 before you rely on the second year.

Smittybilt covers soft goods for 1 year against defects in materials and workmanship. It excludes misuse, accidents and improper installation. Its instructions add "improper or inadequate cleaning and/or maintenance", and the warranty does not transfer.

Smittybilt claims go to 1-888-717-5797 or info@smittybilt.com with proof of purchase. Parts go back at the owner's expense.

Owner reports

These are retailer reviews, not specs. We could not open the JeepForum or WranglerForum threads on either cover, so we have left them out.

Who should buy which

Most TJ and LJ owners: Rough Country 91001. It costs $60.04 less, states the longer warranty, and describes its padding and water resistance. Those are the things you buy a neoprene cover for.

Tan interior: Smittybilt 471325. Rough Country only makes black. At its current sale price the tan set is also the cheaper buy, but its page names the TJ only.

First-time installer who wants a printed sheet: Smittybilt 471301. Its instructions are generic, but they exist. We found none for 91001.

FAQ

Will Rough Country 91001 or Smittybilt 471301 fit a 1997-2002 TJ?

No. Both makers sell a separate part for the earlier seats. Rough Country's is 91000 and Smittybilt's is 471201. The 2003 seat has a different outline, so the covers are not interchangeable.

Do these covers fit the 2004-2006 Wrangler Unlimited (LJ)?

Yes for both. Rough Country titles 91001 for the Wrangler Unlimited (04-06). Smittybilt's 471301 page says it fits the 2003-2006 TJ/LJ. The tan 471325 page names the TJ only.

Do I need airbag cutouts on a TJ seat cover?

No source we checked lists a seat-mounted side airbag on any TJ or LJ. Seat-mounted side airbags were listed as a new option on the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited. Neither maker makes an airbag claim for these parts.

Which one has the longer warranty?

Rough Country. Its maker data states a 2 year limited warranty, although some retailers list 1 year. Smittybilt covers soft goods for 1 year against defects in materials and workmanship.
