What each part is, and the problem it solves

An open TJ gets rained on, sat on in wet clothes and climbed on by dogs. A fitted neoprene cover keeps all of that off the factory cloth. It also hides seats that have already worn through.

Rough Country 91001 is one black set for both front buckets and the rear seat. Rugged Ridge sells the same coverage three ways. The 13213 front pair and 13263 rear are sold alone, and the 13293 kit bundles both.

Rugged Ridge is an Omix-ADA brand, and its warranty is written in Omix-ADA's name.

Fitment, side by side

Both makers split their TJ covers at 2003. That year the front seat changed from a rounder back to one with a distinct separation between back and headrest. A cover cut for one outline does not sit right on the other.

The LJ is the fitment question here. Rough Country names the Wrangler Unlimited (04-06) in its own product title. Rugged Ridge's current pages name the TJ only.

Rugged Ridge's rear cover instructions are titled for the "TJ/LJ", though, and its 2017 page listed the 2004-2006 Unlimited. We think the LJ fits. We would still ask Rugged Ridge before ordering for one.

Rugged Ridge's front instructions are a shared sheet for 1976-2006 covers. Its rear sheet is written for the 2003-2006 TJ/LJ alone.

Rough Country describes what is under the surface: four layers and foam padding. Rugged Ridge says "durable water-resistant neoprene" and stops there. Neither publishes a thickness.

Rugged Ridge wins on choice. Beyond all black, it offers black with gray, tan or red inserts. Rough Country makes black only.

What's in the box

Rough Country ships a front seat cover pair and a rear seat cover. The maker adds headrest covers "where applicable".

Rugged Ridge's instructions show each front seat as an upper and a lower section. The rear is a "Rear seat upper" and a "Rear seat lower". No separate headrest cover is listed.

One trap: the 13213 and 13263 product pages carry copy saying the kit includes fronts and a rear. That is template text. Only 13293 contains both rows.

Install compared

Neither cover needs tools. Rough Country quotes 1-2 hours and a retailer describes it as slip on, "fasten them with the straps provided". We found no Rough Country instructions for this part.

Rugged Ridge publishes both sheets. At the front, straps buckle together under the seat and flaps push through between the back and the cushion. The instructions warn, "Be careful not to over tighten these straps."

The Rugged Ridge rear is different. It holds on with hook-and-loop alone, which grabs the carpeted lower section and the seat's underside. Step 5 says to "Loosen connection where neoprene is over stressed."

Rugged Ridge's current site gives no install time. Its 2017 page said less than an hour, and Quadratec says 1-2 hours.

What it changes on the Jeep

A seat cover changes no geometry and needs no other parts. What matters is that every lever still works. Rugged Ridge lists its cut-outs, and its rear cover has a slit for the rear seat release.

TJ seats carry no side airbag in any source we checked, so airbag cut-outs are not a factor. Seat-mounted side airbags were first listed on the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited. Neither maker mentions airbags for these parts.

Warranty and support

Rugged Ridge wins this outright. It warrants the covers for five years against defects in material and workmanship. The cover must be installed and used as the instructions say.

The Rugged Ridge warranty covers the first retail buyer only, on products first sold in the United States. For the first 30 days you claim through the seller. After that, contact Omix-ADA at 800-328-2293 or CSTeam@omix-ada.com with the part number, proof of purchase and photos.

Rough Country's maker data states a 2 year limited warranty. Several retailers list 1 year. Call Rough Country at 1-800-222-7023 if the second year matters to you.

Who should buy which

LJ owners and buyers on a budget: Rough Country 91001. It is $60.04 cheaper, it names the Unlimited on its title, and it straps down front and rear.

Owners keeping the Jeep for years: Rugged Ridge 13293.01. Five years of cover is more than twice Rough Country's stated term. That outweighs the price gap if the covers live outdoors.

Anyone who wants color: Rugged Ridge. Gray, tan and red inserts are only on its side. Tan costs more, at $279.99.

FAQ

Will either set fit a 1997-2002 TJ?

No. Rough Country's earlier set is 91000 and Rugged Ridge's is the 13292.01 kit. The 2003 seat has a different outline, so buy by model year.

Does Rugged Ridge 13293.01 fit the LJ?

Probably, but the maker is inconsistent. The current product pages say TJ only. Rugged Ridge's own rear cover instructions and its 2017 product page list the LJ, and Quadratec does too.

Should I buy the Rugged Ridge kit or the front and rear separately?

Buy the kit. On ruggedridge.com the black front pair is $239.99 and the black rear is $167.99. The 13293.01 kit with both is $249.99.

Which has the longer warranty?

Rugged Ridge, by a wide margin. It warrants the covers for five years against defects in material and workmanship. Rough Country's maker data states two years.
