What each part is, and the problem it solves

A TJ lifted five inches or more needs longer front shocks. Stock-length shocks top out before the axle reaches full droop, and they bottom out if the bump stops were not extended to match. The right shock is the one whose travel window sits where your axle now moves.

Rough Country 770743_F is a pair of M1 monotube front shocks rated for 5-6.5 in. of lift. It is the tallest M1 front Rough Country lists for the TJ. The body is a 2 in. seamless tube with a 46mm digressive piston and an 18mm chromed rod.

Bilstein 24-188180 is a single B8 5100, the monotube Bilstein builds for lifted trucks and SUVs. Bilstein lists it for the 1997-2006 Wrangler with a stem top and a bar pin bottom, which is the TJ front layout. Bilstein does not print a lift height for it.

Fitment, side by side

This is where the comparison turns. Rough Country gives you a lift range. Bilstein gives you a year range and a list of interchange numbers, and one of those is Fox 985-24-042.

Fox rates 985-24-042 for a 4-6 in. lift. Yet Fox lists that shock at 27.08 in. extended and 16.7 in. compressed, and the Bilstein is 2.47 in. shorter extended and 1.72 in. shorter collapsed. Treat the interchange as a mount-and-application match, not proof the Bilstein reaches full droop on a 5-6.5 in. lift.

Bilstein sells a longer B8 5100 for the same years, 24-187190, at 26.50 in. extended and 16.51 in. collapsed. It has no published lift rating either. If you go Bilstein, measure your droop and compression first, then pick the length that fits.

Specs and construction

The two are closer inside than the price gap suggests. Both are 2 in. monotubes with a 46mm digressive piston. The Rough Country rod is 18mm against Bilstein's 14mm shaft, a 4mm difference.

Bilstein prints every length that matters: 24.61 in. extended, 14.98 in. collapsed and 9.65 in. of stroke. Rough Country does not publish lengths for 770743_F in any source we reached. So one shock gives you numbers but no lift rating, and the other gives you a lift rating but no numbers.

What's in the box

Rough Country's kit data lists one item: the M1 monotube shock pair, stocked as 770743P. Mounting hardware is not itemized, and the shocks carry their own natural rubber bushings.

Bilstein 24-188180 is one shock with a black bellows boot. Bilstein lists B4-KT1-Z097A00 as the replacement mounting kit, which is worth knowing if your old stud hardware is tired.

Install compared

Both bolt in at the factory front mounts, stud up top and bar pin at the axle. Rough Country lists the job at 1-2 hours and says the M1 is designed to be mounted body-up. Bilstein does not publish a time.

Bilstein's general instructions say to check that dimensions and fastening points match the original shock before fitting. Skip the impact gun on the Bilstein. Its warranty excludes damage from impact tools and wrong fastener torque. We found no install sheet for the M1.

What it changes on the Jeep, and what else you need

Warranty and support

Rough Country states a 3 year limited warranty. We could not reach its warranty page to quote the terms.

Bilstein lists the B8 5100 under its limited lifetime warranty. It covers the original purchaser who bought from an authorized North American distributor, and it is non-transferable. You need proof of purchase and you pay to ship the shock back.

Read the exclusions before you rely on it off-road. Bilstein excludes normal wear of dust boots and rubber bushings, ride quality complaints, and damage from road hazards, collision or competition use. It also excludes parts fitted to a vehicle its catalog does not list.

Owner reports

These are owner reports, not specs. We found no citable TJ reports for the Rough Country M1, and only one for the B8 5100.

• Bilstein, owner report: u/suicideking72 on r/JeepTJ (April 2026) said "I had Bilstein 5100 on a previous Jeep and hated them, tough rough and jarring." The post does not say that Jeep was a TJ.

Who should buy which

Built 5-6.5 in. and want a shock rated for it: Rough Country 770743_F. It is the only one of the two with a lift rating, and the pair costs $164.05 less than two Bilsteins.

Measured your travel and it fits 24.61 in. extended: Bilstein 24-188180. You get a lifetime warranty, a boot and a maker that prints every dimension. That is worth the premium to a builder who measures.

Near the top of the range, around 6 in. or more: lean Rough Country. The Bilstein is shorter than even the 4-6 in. Fox it cross-references.

What lift height is the Bilstein 24-188180 for?

Bilstein does not say. Its product page lists the 1997-2006 Wrangler with no lift rating. The same page names Fox 985-24-042 as an interchange, and Fox rates that shock for a 4-6 in. lift.

Is either one sold as a pair?

The Rough Country is. Its $179.95 MAP buys both front shocks. Bilstein sells 24-188180 one at a time at $172.00 and lists two per vehicle, so the pair is $344.00.

Which has the better warranty?

Bilstein. The B8 5100 carries a limited lifetime warranty for the original purchaser, with proof of purchase. Rough Country states a 3 year limited warranty for 770743_F.

Does the Bilstein come with a boot?

Yes. Bilstein lists a black bellows boot as included. Rough Country's data for the M1 does not mention a boot.
