What a Lift Actually Breaks

A lift kit is sold as a box of springs. What it actually does is move the axles away from the frame, and every part that connects the two was dimensioned for the distance they used to be apart. The kit rarely includes those parts, and the instructions rarely dwell on them.
None of this is an argument against lifting a TJ. It is an argument for buying the follow-on parts at the same time, because every one of them is cheaper to fit while the suspension is already apart.
1. The track bar — the one that ruins the drive
The track bar is a fixed-length link from the frame to the axle. It does not swing straight up and down; it swings through an arc. So when you raise the axle, the bar also pulls it sideways — the front axle ends up offset relative to the body, typically by enough to see if you look down at the tyres in the wheel wells.
The symptom is a Jeep that always wants to wander, a steering wheel that is not centred when the vehicle is going straight, and an alignment shop that cannot fix either. An adjustable track bar restores the axle to centre. It is not an accessory; on any lift beyond a modest spacer it is part of the lift.
2. Caster, and why the steering feels dead
Raising a coil-sprung axle rotates it slightly. Rotation changes caster — the angle that makes a shopping trolley wheel trail behind its pivot and makes your steering self-centre after a corner.
Lose enough caster and the Jeep stops returning to centre on its own. It feels vague and unweighted, and the driver ends up steering constantly to hold a lane. Adjustable control arms, or cam bolts on the lower arms, are what bring it back. Chasing it with an alignment alone does not work, because the adjustment range was designed around stock ride height.
3. Bump stops — the cheap part that breaks expensive ones
Bump stops decide where upward travel ends. Lift without extending them and the suspension now has more travel than the tyre has room for, so at full compression the tyre finds the flare, the sway bar or the frame instead. The stop does its job by hitting something; your job is to choose what.
4. Brake lines and the sway bar links
Both are length-critical and both fail at full droop rather than full compression, which is why they are so often missed — the failure happens on the trail, at the point of maximum axle extension, not in the driveway. A stretched brake line is a genuine safety item, not a convenience one.
5. Driveshaft angle — the one that scales with height
Every inch of lift steepens the angle the driveshaft has to work through. Universal joints tolerate a surprising amount of that, right up until they do not, and the symptom is a vibration that arrives at a particular speed and gets worse with height.
At modest lift heights it is usually a non-issue. Past roughly three to four inches on a short-wheelbase TJ it typically needs addressing properly — commonly a slip yoke eliminator and a CV-style rear driveshaft, which is a real expense and belongs in the budget from the start rather than as a surprise afterwards.
The LJ behaves differently here. The Unlimited's extra ten inches of wheelbase makes the driveshaft angle shallower at any given lift height. That is one of several reasons lift advice written for a short-wheelbase TJ does not transfer directly.
The order to buy in
If the budget will not cover everything at once, this is the sequence that keeps the Jeep drivable at each step: track bar, then caster correction, then bump stops, then lines and links, then driveline when the vibration tells you it is time. The first two are what make the vehicle handle correctly; the rest prevent damage.
