Death Wobble on a TJ: what causes it, in the order to check

If you have had it, you do not need it described. A bump at speed, and the front axle begins to oscillate side to side so violently that the steering wheel is useless and the only way out is to slow down hard. It is frightening the first time and it does not improve with familiarity.
The important thing to understand before spending any money: death wobble is not a part. It is what a solid front axle does when something that is meant to locate it precisely has developed play, and a bump gives that play somewhere to go. The axle is heavy, it pivots on its own steering, and once it starts oscillating it feeds itself.
Why a steering stabiliser is the wrong first purchase
It is the most-recommended fix on every forum, and it is a damper. A new steering stabiliser can absolutely make an early wobble quieter. What it cannot do is remove the play that started it — it just raises the speed and the bump size required to trigger it.
That is worse than doing nothing, because the underlying joint keeps wearing while you believe it is fixed. When it comes back, it comes back at a higher speed. Fit a stabiliser because the old one is leaking, not because the Jeep wobbles.
The geometry underneath it
On a TJ the track bar locates the front axle side to side, and the drag link transmits steering to it. Both run roughly across the vehicle, and at stock height they run at similar angles.
Raise the axle and those two angles stop matching. Now, as the suspension moves through its travel, the track bar swings the axle through one arc while the drag link pulls the steering through a different one. The result is that suspension travel produces steering input on its own — bump steer. That is not death wobble yet, but it is the condition in which a small amount of joint play becomes a large oscillation.
The order to check, and why this order
Work from the parts that carry the most load and wear fastest, toward the ones that rarely fail. Do not skip ahead because a later item is easier to replace.
- 1. Track bar — both ends. This is the single most common cause on a TJ. Check the frame-side bracket as carefully as the bar: the bolt hole elongates, and a bar that measures fine can still move in a worn bracket. Have someone rock the steering while you watch the joint.
- 2. Drag link and tie rod ends. Any perceptible free play here is enough. They are consumables on a twenty-year-old vehicle.
- 3. Ball joints. Upper and lower, both sides. Play here is loaded differently from the tie rod ends and is easy to miss unless the wheel is off the ground and rocked top-to-bottom.
- 4. Control arm bushings. Perished bushings let the axle move fore-and-aft under braking, which changes caster momentarily — enough to start an oscillation on an otherwise sound front end.
- 5. Steering box. Mounting bolts first — they loosen and the resulting movement mimics box wear exactly. Then internal play in the box itself.
- 6. Wheels and tyres. Balance, a bent rim, or a separated belt will trigger it. Cheap and quick to rule out, which is why it is worth checking early even though it is last on the wear list.
If it started after a lift
Then the lift is the prime suspect, and specifically whether the supporting parts went on with it. An adjustable track bar to re-centre the axle, and attention to the drag link angle, are what keep the two links parallel at the new height. What good looks like
When it is right, the Jeep tracks straight without constant correction, returns to centre after a turn without being pulled back, and hitting a pothole produces a thump rather than a shimmy. If you are steering continuously to hold a lane on a flat road, something in the list above has play in it, whether or not it has wobbled yet.
