What each part is, and the problem it solves

The TJ's rear sway bar is clamped to the axle. Its end links reach up to the frame. After a lift the axle sits farther down, so a factory link leaves the bar's arms tipped at a steep angle.

An extended end link simply spans the new gap. Both parts here do that with one fixed length. The question is which length, and for which lift.

Rough Country 1015 is a rear link sold for 4 to 6 in. of lift. Its feed is blunt about it: "ONLY fits models with 4in - 6in of suspension lift." Quadratec staff measure it at 10 in. center eye to center eye.

Rugged Ridge 18321.01 is a pair of extended rear links. Rugged Ridge says they are "designed for 97-17 Jeep Wrangler with 4 inches of lift." Its page headline narrows the TJ fitment to 1997-2006.

Rough Country's 1028 is sometimes mistaken for a longer 1015. It is actually the front TJ and XJ link, a bent design with a U-shaped bracket, for 4 to 5 in. of lift.

Fitment, side by side

This is the decision for most owners. A 4 in. lift fits both parts. A 5 or 6 in. lift only has Rough Country's word behind it.

Rough Country's fitment data has no 2005-2006 Sahara row. No note excludes it, so we read that as a data gap.

Specs and construction

Both makers leave real gaps here. Rough Country never says what its bushings are made of. Rugged Ridge never says how long its link is.

What's in the box

Rough Country: a pair of rear links plus installation hardware, per Quadratec and ExtremeTerrain. No itemized list is published.

Rugged Ridge: two links, per ExtremeTerrain. Rugged Ridge's page adds that "everything you need for installation is included." No itemized list is published.

Install compared

Both are direct replacements for the factory rear links. Neither maker calls for drilling, cutting or welding. The difference is how long the makers and their dealers say it takes.

Rough Country's feed quotes 2 to 3 hours, and Quadratec rates the job Level 2, intermediate. ExtremeTerrain puts the Rugged Ridge at about 15 minutes. It puts the Rough Country at about 30 minutes, so the gap between the two is smaller than the maker figures suggest.

We found no install sheet from either maker. Neither publishes torque values, so use the factory service manual for the rear link fasteners. Budget time for rusted factory bolts on an older TJ, since that is where one Rough Country owner lost his time.

What it changes on the Jeep, and what else you need

A longer rear link puts the bar back to work after the lift. It does not change ride height, caster or the track bar. It only restores the bar's angle.

Plan the front at the same time. The front links are stretched by the same lift. Rough Country's front part is 1028, for 4 to 5 in. of lift. Our list of what a lift breaks puts links alongside brake lines as the parts that fail at full droop.

Fixed links or quick disconnects? On a TJ the disconnect question is almost always a front one. Zone and JKS both describe their TJ disconnects as front parts. At the rear, a fixed link like either of these is the norm.

Warranty and support

Rugged Ridge warrants the 18321.01 for five years from the date of retail purchase. Coverage goes to the initial retail purchaser only, and it is not transferable. It applies when the part is installed and used according to the supplied instructions, and Rugged Ridge may ask for proof of purchase.

Rough Country describes a limited lifetime replacement warranty against manufacturer defects, in product copy reproduced by retailers. We could not load Rough Country's warranty page to check its exclusions.

Owner reports

These are retailer reviews, labeled as such. A Quadratec reviewer of the Rough Country 1015 (John J., May 2022, 3 stars) found washers missing. He also said the original bolts and sleeves were too small for the new bushings.

ExtremeTerrain shows 4.8 stars from 24 reviews for the Rough Country and 4.7 stars from 28 for the Rugged Ridge. We could not retrieve forum threads on either part.

Who should buy which

5 or 6 in. of lift: Rough Country 1015. Rugged Ridge does not claim that range.

An LJ Unlimited: Rough Country 1015. It is the one of the two with published LJ fitment.

A TJ at exactly 4 in., price no object, rubber bushings wanted: Rugged Ridge 18321.01. It is the only one of the two that states its bushing material. You pay $55.04 more for that and give up the lifetime term.

Everyone else at 4 in.: Rough Country 1015. It costs less than half as much and carries the longer warranty term.

FAQ

Will the Rugged Ridge 18321.01 work with a 5 or 6 in. lift?

Rugged Ridge only says it is designed for 4 in. of lift. It publishes no range beyond that. Rough Country rates the 1015 for 4 to 6 in.

Does the Rugged Ridge 18321.01 fit the LJ Unlimited?

Rugged Ridge's page names the 1997-2006 Wrangler TJ and does not mention the Unlimited. Rough Country's fitment data includes the 2004-2006 Unlimited for the 1015.

Which of the two has the longer warranty?
