What each kit is, and what it fixes on a TJ

A non-Rubicon TJ's NP231 uses a slip yoke. The rear driveshaft slides on the transfer case output to absorb suspension travel. After a lift the short rear shaft runs at a steep angle, and that is where the vibration comes from.

A slip yoke eliminator (SYE) replaces the rear housing and output shaft with a shorter housing and a fixed yoke. The slip moves into a longer CV driveshaft. Advance Adapters says its housing adds up to 6 in. of rear driveline length on a TJ.

Why these two look like the same kit

The part numbers match. Advance Adapters sells 50-7906 with a 1310 CV yoke and 50-7907 with a non-CV yoke. Rough Country sold its kit as 50-7906, and 50-7907 now replaces it.

The wording matches. Rough Country lists a "1 3/8in-32 spline rear output shaft" and a "356-T6 heat treated aluminum alloy tailhousing." Advance Adapters uses the same words. Rough Country's note about the post-1997 shaft and the sprocket needle bearings also matches AA's.

The instructions do not. They are separate documents, but they give the same torques, the same shift rail rule and the same speedometer step. Neither maker says the parts come from the same place. So we compare what each will sell you and stand behind.

Fitment, side by side

Advance Adapters lists fitment by case, not by model year. It covers the NP231 with either the 21 or the 23 spline input, so you do not need to know which one your TJ has.

Ignore the Rubicon listings. Rough Country and one retailer list Rubicon trims. Rough Country's own note says "NP231 model transfer cases ONLY," and the Rubicon does not have one.

Specs and construction

Advance Adapters publishes a part number for every piece. That makes a lost seal or a damaged yoke easy to replace. Its tailhousing seal 716751, for example, is listed at $4.90.

What's in the box

Rough Country's instructions list 10 items in one carton:

• Rear housing assembly with seal, bearing and snap ring pre-assembled
• Rear output yoke and yoke nut
• Mainshaft
• Speedometer drive gear and speedometer snap ring
• Mode gear snap ring
• Housing plug
• Rear and front output spline seals

Advance Adapters' bill of materials for 50-7906 has 6 lines. They are the 50-7906P hardware pack, the 300475 1310 CV yoke, the 51-7906 tailhousing, the 52-7905 output shaft, the 716318 bearing and the 716751 seal.

Both housings carry a threaded port for the XJ Cherokee's vacuum actuator. On a Wrangler you plug it, and both kits supply the plug.

Install compared

The job is the same. You drain the case and pull the front yoke, the selector lever and the old rear housing. You split the case, move the drive sprocket and mode hub onto the new shaft, then rebuild with RTV and refill with ATF.

Advance Adapters' instructions are more complete. They run 12 pages and name the tools, including an impact wrench for the front yoke nut. They also warn that the old slinger is "tough" to remove. Rough Country's are a 6-page scan with no tools list.

Neither maker publishes an install time. Retailers quote 3-5 hours for the AA kit. For the Rough Country kit they quote anything from 3-5 hours to 8-10 hours.

What it changes on the Jeep, and what else you'll need

• A CV rear driveshaft. Tom Wood's sells a TJ double cardan shaft for $399.00 on its own site as of September 2026. It fits the TJ and TJ Unlimited, not the Rubicon. Advance Adapters also sells a Tom Wood's shaft built for its kit, 50-7906TW4, for $389.55 on its own site.
• Rough Country's shafts. RC lists the 5075.1 and 5074.1 for TJs with 4-6 in. of lift, by axle and transmission. Neither fits Unlimited or Rubicon models.
• Measure after the kit is in, or subtract. Tom Wood's tells AA buyers who order a shaft before installing the kit to subtract 3 in. from their current measurement.
• Pinion angle. Both makers want the rear pinion pointed at the transfer case yoke at normal load. Tom Wood's says coil-sprung Jeeps do that with adjustable rear upper control arms.

Tom Wood's says a transfer case drop can cover a 1-2 in. lift. Past 2 in. an SYE and CV shaft typically take over. Our lift follow-on parts guide covers the rest of the list.

Warranty and support

Rough Country: "Rough Country Suspension Systems offers a Lifetime Replacement Warranty on most suspension products." Its category list never names driveline parts. Retailers list this kit as limited lifetime. It covers the original purchaser only, and not labor.

Advance Adapters: "Warranty is limited to repair or replacement." AA's general tier covers "Adapters, Motor Mounts, Headers, Transmissions & Miscellaneous Accessories" for "ninety (90) days from the date of shipping." SYE kits are not named, and Northridge4x4 lists 90 days. AA voids coverage for "racing/competition use" and for modifying kit parts.

This is the one place Rough Country clearly wins. AA does run a tech line, (800) 350-2223, weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific.

Owner reports

These are owner reports, not specs. Several forum threads were paywalled and could not be read.

• A NAXJA member compared an AA kit with a JB Conversions kit in November 2017. They found "rough machining around the speedometer mount and the threading" and "random pitting in the casting." The AA housing weighed 4 lbs 2 oz. They said both kits should work. (owner report, NAXJA)
• A Comanche Club owner in 2018 called AA's instructions "pretty much terrible" for a first-timer. They still found the install easy with the right tools, and recommended duckbill snap ring pliers. (owner report, Comanche Club)
• In a 2006 JeepForum thread comparing Tom Wood's and AA kits, one member recommended AA as "proven." (owner report, JeepForum)
• Rough Country's own review system showed 4.9 stars from 137 reviews in December 2025. That is a store-hosted rating.

Who should buy which

• Lowest price for the same published spec: Advance Adapters. It is $26.90 less than the Rough Country MAP, and AA says it manufactures the housing and shaft itself.
• Longest warranty: Rough Country, as long as its lifetime terms cover this part. Ninety days is short for a part you will not stress until the trail.
• You want a different yoke: Advance Adapters. It offers 1330 CV, non-CV and flange yokes. Rough Country lists only the 1310 CV.
• LJ Unlimited owners: either kit, but not Rough Country's shafts. Pair the kit with a shaft that covers the Unlimited, such as Tom Wood's.
• Rubicon: neither.

FAQ

Is the Rough Country kit the same as the Advance Adapters kit?

On paper they are twins. Both makers use the part numbers 50-7906 and 50-7907, and Rough Country's parts list repeats Advance Adapters' wording. Neither maker says the parts share a source, and the two instruction sheets are separate documents.

Do I need a CV driveshaft with either kit?

Yes. Rough Country says the kit does not work with factory driveshafts. Advance Adapters says you will need a C.V. equipped driveshaft with its 1310 CV yoke.

Will either kit fit a TJ Rubicon?

No. Both are for the NP231 case. The 2003-2006 Rubicon uses the NV241OR.

How much longer does the rear driveshaft get?

Advance Adapters says its housing adds up to 6 in. of rear driveline length on a TJ. Rough Country does not publish a figure.
